What is Kappa Kappa Psi
Kappa Kappa Psi operates primarily as a student service and leadership recognition society whose chief aim is to assist the Director of Bands in developing the leadership and enthusiasm that is required of his/her band. Our goals are to provide the band not only with organized and concentrated service activities, but to give our membership valid and wholesome experiences in organization, leadership and social contacts. The honorary nature of membership is based on our premise that “it is an honor to be selected to serve” this band, its department of music, its sponsoring institution, and the cause of band music in the nation's colleges and universities.
History of Theta Sigma
The idea for a Kappa Kappa Psi chapter at Fairmont State College started in the fall of 1986. Founding Brother Jeff Caplinger transferred from West Virginia University to Fairmont State. Due to the size of the band, Jeff, and a group of about 25 interested people, decided to just start a Kappa Kappa Psi chapter and have it coed.To promote and support the band and to provide a connection of brotherhood and a sense of family, they got Dr. Harry Faulk to be the sponsor and began the initial colonization process. There were lots of things that needed to be done in the band program. The Band told Dr. Faulk and others that a Kappa Kappa Psi chapter could do many things to help the band program. They had seen what Omicron did at WVU and thought FSU needed something similar. Theta Sigma was born and the rest is history.
